This should be real interesting. Currently I see the future as follows:
Obama is elected president. Tries to start troop withdrawal from Iraq, then realizes that it is and always has been a silly pipe dream. Changes his tune regarding Iraq, comes up with some lame excuse, public buys it but is skeptical.
Starts to work on nationalized health care along with a Democratic majority in the Senate and Congress. The beginnings of the next catastrophic failure on a major scale by our federal government. Numbers are passed around that would make the military blush, before deciding on the absolute largest one possible. With a theoretical plan in place that takes into account barely any actual logistical problems, we're off to the races. The largest bridge to nowhere has begun construction. Sexy.
Gas price controls are talked about and implemented. History schmistory, it didn't work then because we weren't the ones running it! Prices controls lead to serious shortages nationwide. Seventies here we come. Bell bottoms and afros come back in style.
Somewhere around mid year two people begin to realize that just voting for "change" might not be the best way to vote, especially when the change is a naive, dishonest, mentally challenged jack off. This leads into election 2012, at which point a gay hispanic atheist woman could win as a republican (if they would run one). But seriously, if you are a republican, and age 35 or older, consider throwing your name into the hat for 2012. I'll only be 34, so I'm out of the running, but pretty much anyone else nominated is taking it down. Even one of the polygamists recently arrested for marrying 12 year olds could take it.
So in closing, Obama will win the election coming up. It's all but assured it will be so. In the long run however, it will be the greatest thing to ever happen to the republican party. So bring on the Obama! I'm ready to sacrifice for my country.
I love stories like this.
My girlfriend and I have a pretty girl Aussie shepherd mix, who will be eight relatively soon. She is absolutely part of the family. Today, I will be picking up a second dog from a local shelter, and he should prove to be quite a bit of work.
Recently we had to put down a dog we had adopted for aggression (serious biting). The shelter was not willing to take him back at that point (he had been brought back before for the same issue). That was a horrible experience, and let me tell you it shakes your confidence. Suddenly you go from very confident you can raise a well behaved animal, to second guessing every decision you make.
I felt like jumping right back into the fray was the best medicine, and I'll soon know if I'm right. The new dog, Petey, is a year old and recovering from a leg fracture. He will probably need to take it easy for another month or two (it's been about a month and a half so far). That means a lot of attention and monitoring, and I really want to make sure he gets exactly what he needs. He is such an energetic little guy, I want him to have four healthy legs to run around on in the near future.
Currently I have two crates setup, one at home, and one at the office. He has to be confined a lot to keep him from getting a bit crazy and injuring the leg, so I'm hoping just having the company around will make things easier for him. Company, and rawhide, these are few of dogs favorite things! I'll update once I've had some time to see how things are progressing.
For anyone who missed it, the California Supreme Court made gay marriage legal in the state. This of course was met with a mix of controversy and celebration from both sides of the issue. And now, Ellen DeGeneres and her significant other are getting married. That's always the case, gotta run and get married before a potential reversal occurs!
I for one am against the ruling, but not in a homophobic way. I believe gays should have the right to be married. My issue has always been more with the conflict of government regulating a religious practice. If gays want the right to be married in the classic sense of the word, they should be petitioning the Vatican, not the US government. If they just are looking for equal treatment under the law, civil unions should suffice.
My problem is that government should no more have the right to regulate religion than religion should have the right to regulate government. It's like anti-trust for the people, let there be multiple "Gods" to worship, be it the federal supreme court, or Allah. I say this as an atheist, I have no affinity to any god of any religion. What worries me is the unrestricted power of government, and its ability to impose any notion on us without borders.
Still, I'm glad to see progress being made in this area. I can only hope that the pope himself will come around on this issue. Given his previous comments regarding gay marriage though, I'm not counting on it.
Our politicians in America and around the world are always hitting these "hot button" issues. Things like gay marriage, gas prices, taxes, global warming. I have yet to hear a politician mention anything about population control. I doubt I ever will, at least from one that makes it anywhere anyway.
But seriously, when it comes to personal responsibility, is there a greater one? For those that don't think it's something that could ever or would ever need to be governmentally controlled, take a gander at China. But forget that, it's not something that should need to be governmentally controlled.
Though theoretical, imagine a country where everyone had children when they could afford them (to their best judgement). I suppose better wording would be "people did not have children when they most certainly could not afford them." I can almost assure you that overall poverty levels, crime, and tax burdens in general would be lower. Actually, I might take back the tax part. Could be lowered sure, but government loves money so who knows.
I mean come on, we have Planned Parenthood out there, birth control is all but free. Go grab some condoms, some Depo-Provera, a vasectomy... something that will stop another baby from showing up. Mistakes happen, and that's fine. But if you've had three mistakes or more, you my friend are an asshole.
