Man's best friend

I love stories like this.

My girlfriend and I have a pretty girl Aussie shepherd mix, who will be eight relatively soon. She is absolutely part of the family. Today, I will be picking up a second dog from a local shelter, and he should prove to be quite a bit of work.

Recently we had to put down a dog we had adopted for aggression (serious biting). The shelter was not willing to take him back at that point (he had been brought back before for the same issue). That was a horrible experience, and let me tell you it shakes your confidence. Suddenly you go from very confident you can raise a well behaved animal, to second guessing every decision you make.

I felt like jumping right back into the fray was the best medicine, and I'll soon know if I'm right. The new dog, Petey, is a year old and recovering from a leg fracture. He will probably need to take it easy for another month or two (it's been about a month and a half so far). That means a lot of attention and monitoring, and I really want to make sure he gets exactly what he needs. He is such an energetic little guy, I want him to have four healthy legs to run around on in the near future.

Currently I have two crates setup, one at home, and one at the office. He has to be confined a lot to keep him from getting a bit crazy and injuring the leg, so I'm hoping just having the company around will make things easier for him. Company, and rawhide, these are few of dogs favorite things! I'll update once I've had some time to see how things are progressing.
